3 Reasons Americans Can't Access Proper Dental Services

June 11, 2025

Access to dental care should be a given, but for many Americans, it's far from reality. Despite advances in dental technology and awareness about the importance of oral health, a significant portion of the population still struggles to receive the dental care they need. These barriers not only affect one's dental health but also contribute to broader health issues, as oral health is intrinsically linked to overall well-being. Keep reading to learn more.

1. Lack of Dental Insurance

One of the primary reasons many Americans can't access dental services is the lack of dental insurance. Unlike medical insurance, dental coverage is not standard in most job-based health insurance plans. This leaves many without affordable options for routine preventive care, let alone more extensive treatments that can be necessary over a lifetime. Consequently, those without coverage either forgo care or pay high out-of-pocket costs, leading to deferred dental health treatment.

2. Insufficient Medicaid Coverage

Medicaid is designed to provide healthcare to low-income individuals and families; however, dental coverage under Medicaid is often limited. According to the Texas Dentists for Medicaid Reform, nearly three out of five Medicaid beneficiaries surveyed in eight states by Health Plans, Inc were unable to connect with a dentist; this was due to a lack of nearby Medicaid-enrolled providers or providers who could speak their language or were of their cultural background. This highlights an accessibility issue that leaves many underserved communities without the dental care they desperately need.

3. Geographic Barriers

For those in rural areas, even having insurance or the financial means to pay for dental services doesn't guarantee access. Many rural and underserved areas face a shortage of dental professionals, meaning patients need to travel significant distances to find available care. This geographical disparity not only imposes additional financial burdens but also acts as a logistic barrier for those who are unable to travel due to time constraints, transportation issues, or mobility challenges.

A myriad of factors contributes to the inaccessibility of proper dental services for Americans. By understanding these issues, policymakers and healthcare providers can work towards creating comprehensive solutions that improve access to dental care for all.
